• There is a new “Save Documents during Auto-Shutdown” checkbox in Power Saver. When is this feature is enabled, CDU will automatically save your documents before shutting down. Documents which have never been saved (in other words, “Untitled” documents) are saved with unique filenames to a “Work In Progress MM/DD/YY” folder on the desktop, where “MM/DD/YY” is the date at shutdown. File Sharing will also be turned off during Auto-Shutdown.
If “Save Documents during Auto-Shutdown” is disabled, Auto-Shutdown will halt when an application asks if you want to save a file or File Sharing is on and remote users are connected.
• If you are not using "Rotate Items" to rotate through the items in the CDU menu, you can manually rotate through the display items by option-clicking on the CDU menu (a regular click drops the menu, of course).
• During installation on machines in your office, you may wish to type in your home telephone number and address in the configuration dialog. This information may be displayed if Security is preventing access to your machine. If a co-worker needs access to your machine when you are not available, they can then see where to get in touch with you.
• If Security is active, background programs will still be able to continue processing; however the foreground application will be suspended until the correct password is entered.
• The File Sharing selection in the CDU menu is a temporary toggle; use it to temporarily enable or disable File Sharing. On the next restart, File Sharing will revert to the state you last set in the Sharing Setup control panel. Use the Sharing Setup control panel to make File Sharing permanently active or inactive on subsequent restarts.
• Some types of displays (for example, the SE and SE/30 internal screens, and some monochrome video adapters) cannot be dimmed. These displays will be fully darkened by CDU leaving no visible image. However, if another screen saver is loaded before CDU, CDU will not darken these screens.
Q: Why didn’t the appropriate action occur when using CDU Hot Keys?
A: Some of CDU’s default hot keys could be the same default hot keys as other products. These types of conflicts are unavoidable and can be overcome simply by reassigning one of the two keys to another key combination.
Q: Why doesn’t Keyboard Power work properly with WYSIWYG Menus or Now Menus 4.0/4.0.1?
A: When using Keyboard Power arrow keys in a WYSIWYG menu, the cursor may lock up. When using Keyboard Power with Now Menus 4.0/4.0.1, Keyboard Power may not select the proper items on menus which are long enough to be scrolled.
You may still use Keyboard Power with WYSIWYG menus or Now Menus. To avoid conflicts do not use Keyboard Power in a WYSIWYG menu or in a Now Menu that is long enough to be scrolled. Connectix is working with Now Software to find a solution to this problem.
Q: Auto drop or click drop menus do not seem to work. What should I do?
A: This feature may not function properly if you have another utility that provides the same feature, such as Now Menus. To avoid this type of conflict, enable this feature in only one of your utilities.
Q: Will Keyboard Power work in menus created by other extensions?
A: Yes, extensions (for example: Kiwi PowerWindows, WordFinder+, etc.) that add their own menus in the menu bar should load after CDU in order to be accessed by Keyboard Power.
Q: My password is not accepted by the security field, what next?
A: CDU’s security is case sensitive, be sure to enter the appropriate capital letters or click the caps lock key when entering your password. CDU also allows you to have different passwords in different sets or for different users, therefore you need to enter the appropriate password for the user and set that is running at sleep or shut down.
Q: I forgot my password, and CDU will not let me change the password. What can I do to reconfigure security?
A: If a password is only used in one set, select a set with no password and “punch through” the password to all the sets by holding down the Command and Option keys and click in the old password field to “punch through” the password. Otherwise delete the set to remove the password associated with that set.
Q: I remove the CDU control panel from the System Folder but security still appears at startup. How do I remove security?
A: Before removing CDU from the System Folder, turn off Security in the current set and then “punch-through” the setting to all other sets by holding down the command and option keys and clicking on the Security master switch. Or, run the CDU installer and select the remove option to remove CDU fully.
Q: Why does only one application show its windows at a time?
A: In order to help you avoid a cluttered desktop, CPU's AppManager can automatically hide an application's windows when it is in the background. If you want to temporarily see all of your applications' windows, select “Show All” from the System 7 Application Menu. You can turn this feature off by unchecking “Hide Background Apps” in QuickConfigure mode or by unchecking “Hide Background Applications” in the AppManager panel in FineTune mode.
Q: One of my applications crashes when I launch it with CPU installed. What is going on?
A: CPU's Balloon Help panel allows you to remove the Ballon Help menu to regain menubar space. Some applications assume the presence of a Balloon Help menu, and when there is none they will crash. To avoid problems with such programs, turn off “Remove Ballon Help” in QuickConfigure mode or “Remove Ballon Help” in the Balloon Help panel in FineTune mode.
Q: How come the CDU display does not appear in the menubar when using certain applications?
A: Some programs use the whole menu bar. In this case, CDU will remove its display from the menu bar. Choose a smaller font or size in the CDU Display panel to allow the display to fit in the menu. If you want to quickly access the CDU control panel but can’t access the CDU menu, use the configure CDU hot key to launch the control panel (the default combination is Shift-Command-Option-u).
Q: The disk activity indicator is turned on but does not appear. What is wrong?
A: SCSI Manager 4.3 — which is in the ROMs of the Centris 660av and Quadra 840av computers and is available as an extension for the Quadra family — provides a new way to access SCSI devices. CDU versions 1.0 and 1.0.1 cannot detect SCSI activity conducted through the new SCSI Manager and will therefore not display activity by SCSI drivers which uses the new calls. Currently, only Apple Hard Disk drives formatted with Apple's HD SC Setup are affected.
Q: Why does my serial printer print garbage when I start up?
A: CDU is set to always make AppleTalk available by default. This will cause some serial printers to print garbage at startup if they are connected to the printer port. If you do not use AppleTalk, uncheck the “AppleTalk Always Available” feature in the Expert panel to prevent this from happening.
Q: Should CDU load in any particular order?
A: When using other extensions, you may need to change the loading order. In System 7, INITs load alphabetically from the Extensions Folder, then from the Control Panels folder, and finally from the System Folder itself. To change the load order of items, add a space in front of its name to put it higher in the alphabetical list. If you need a control panel to load before an extension, move the control panel to the extensions folder, make an alias, and put the alias in the control panel folder.
CDU Loading Order Suggestions:
• Alysis SuperDisk! should load after CDU.
• Olduvai Multiclip should load after CDU.
• Berkeley Systems After Dark screen saver should load before CDU.
• Aladdin Magic Menu should load before CDU.
• Extensions that add their own menus in the menu bar, except for Magic Menu, should load after CDU in order to be accessed by Keyboard Power.
